OCTOBER 3 - NYC - THE TANK - 3PM - LOOK UP, HANNAH

A new piece I will have written by then based on Charlie Chaplin’s final speech in his frightening heartwarming satire, The Great Dictator.  It’s part of a Detour concert of newly commissioned works all based on political speeches.  More info on this soon!

NOVEMBER 9 - PRINCETON - TAPLIN AUDITORIUM - 8PM - NEW PIECE FOR KATHY SUPOVE

A new piece I will have written by then for incomparable pianist Kathy Supove.  It’s going to involve electronics and Debussy and wrist tethers and all manner of craziness.

STUFF THAT ALREADY HAPPENED:

JULY 29 - NYC - ISSUE PROJECT ROOM - 8PM - TEKIAH

Tekiah, my Jewish bagpipe and electronics piece is happening at Issue Project Room.  Matt Welch, bagpiper extraordinaire really kills on this one.  It’s part of the Floating Points series run by Stephan Moore.  Also that night will be an amazing new sound work by Jascha Narveson (underline amazing).

SEPTEMBER 17 - SAN DIEGO - SUSHI - 8PM - TEKIAH

Matt Welch is performing Tekiah in his set at the Sushi Performing and Visual Art Center.  I find it adorable that he’s actually playing this shofar-service-inspired piece on Yom Kippur.  While he’ll be piping my tune in San Diego I’ll be hearing the ram’s horn that inspired it in New Jersey.

AUGUST 14 - LA - THE HAMMER MUSEUM - 1-4 PM - TOO TUBAS

Too Tubas, my miniature for two tubas, is being performed as part of the Little William Theater Festival for New Music.  Chris Kallmyer commissioned a bunch of composers to write miniature duos for four different groups: two tubas, two clarinets, two violins, and two accordions.  All concerts take place in a closet to audiences of no more than two at a time.  Sounds wild!  Wish I could be there to hear it.

OCTOBER 5 - CHESTER TOWN HALL - CHESTER, UK - 12:45pm - FUNF KLEINE KLAVIERSTUCKE

Kamilla Arku, one of my favorite pianists, will be playing my little pieces Funf Kleine Klavierstucke on a lunchtime recital at Chester Town Hall.  Also on the program will be some kids named Faure, Debussy, and Chopin.

DECEMBER 3 - NYC - FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH - 7:30PM - LOTS OF SONGS FOR PHTHIA

Phthia, my folk-esque, minimalist-ish band is playing a set on Wil Smith’s Music at First concert series.  Wil has brought together a terrific lineup this season and I’m so happy to be a part of it!  Phthia is Sara Budde on clarinets, me singing, Missy Mazzoli on melodica, and James Moore on banjo.  We’re sharing the bill with the sophisticatedly raucous Slow/Fast.

THE INTERNET - ISSUE PROJECT ROOM - TEKIAH

Issue Project Room featured Tekiah, the world’s only bagpipe and electronics piece inspired by the Jewish Liturgy, on their Free Music Archive Blog.  Nice!

AUGUST 21 - CHICAGO - WICKER PARK CULTURAL CENTER - 7:30PM - ATTARA - SKYLINE

Two new pieces I wrote for Noble Fowl Trio (Claire Happel, harp; James Moore, guitar & banjo; Jeremy Harting, guitar and mandolin) are all set to premiere in Chicago.  From the minute James asked me about writing for a harp, mandolin, and banjo trio, my heart was sold.  Skyline riffs on a Benjamin Britten Interlude for solo harp, stately and sparkling; Attara is a bit of a dance in its own quirky, pentatonic way.

AUGUST 28 - NYC - THE STONE - 10PM - TEKIAH

Matt Welch is doing a set at the Stone and he will be including my piece for him Tekiah, the world’s only work for bagpipe and electronics based on the Jewish Liturgy.  I can’t make this show, but I envy any who can!  If you’ve never seen Matt perform, you are really really missing out.

Contemporaneous, a young adventurous group at Bard is playing my old NOW Ensemble piece.  I don’t know these guys, but I hear they’re fantastic and I’m so excited to see Ed continue on in the world (he’s my little miniature that explores everything fun you can do with pitches E and D).
